Imu (underground oven) and Mea 'Ai (food) are at the heart of ancient Hawaiian culinary tradition. Our immersive experience invites you to participate in building an imu, using locally sourced plants and stones to create a traditional underground oven. The food slow-cooked in the imu is not just a meal—it's a connection to generations of knowledge passed down through the land.
Join us for an authentic, hands-on adventure that honors the land and celebrates Hawaiian traditions.
At Imu Mea 'Ai, we partner with local Hawaiian communities and cultural practitioners to offer a deep dive into Hawaiian traditions, honoring the land and its people. Alongside the imu-building and 'ohana-style lu'au, your group may also enjoy a variety of cultural activities, including:
In Hawaiian culture, the 'āina (land) is more than just a resource—it is a living, breathing part of our identity. Caring for the land is integral to who we are as Hawaiians, and at Imu Mea 'Ai, we invite you to share in this responsibility.
Our goal is for you to come as a visitor and leave as a steward of the 'āina. Through hands-on experiences, we aim to instill the understanding that it is vital to leave spaces better than we found them—ensuring that future generations can continue to thrive on this land.
